While renovating the Livonia Transmission Plant (Plant) in 2016, Ford Motor Company (Ford) reported the discovery of chlorinated compounds in the groundwater to EGLE. Ford investigated the contamination and determined one of these compounds, vinyl chloride, was present in the groundwater and had migrated east of the Plant to the adjacent residential neighborhood. In July of 2017 Ford entered into a Consent Decree with EGLE. The Consent Decree requires Ford to conduct investigations and remedial actions under a schedule while EGLE conducts formal regulatory oversight. These actions included Ford installing mitigation systems in the adjacent residential neighborhood in the homes located within the groundwater plume on an expedited schedule. Ford has been investigating and conducting additional interim remedial actions since 2017.
Contamination was also determined to be within the sanitary sewer adjacent to the Plant on Plymouth Road and investigations have recently focused on eliminating the contamination from entering the sewer.
