Major General Robert H. Johnston serves as the commander of the Michigan Air National Guard. As commander, General Johnston directs the activities of the Michgian Air National guard in support of the adjutant general of Michigan, and is responsible for th Air National Guard units located at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Battle Creek Air National Guard Base, and the Combat Readiness Training Center, Alpena, Michigan.

General Johnston received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in 1978 as the honor graduate of the Academy of Military Science. He has served in numberous assignments in flying and operations, as well as command positions at the squadron level up through wing. General Jonston is a command pilot with over 3,600 hours and has flown the F-4 and F-16. Prior to assuming his current position. General Johnston was the 127 Wing Commander at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Michigan, and the chief of staff, Joing Forces Headquarters, Michigan Air National Guard. In civilian life he is a pilot for American Airlines and a licensed attorney.

In 1990 he transitioned to the C - 130 as a navigator. In 1996 he joined the full time workforce at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, serving as the 127th Airlift Group Commander. In September 2002, he was selected as the vice commander of the 127th Wing. On 1 May 2004, he assumed command of the 127th Wing. He was appointed to his current position in January 2006.
