Contact:  Tom Krashen, MDOT Aviation Services Division, 517-335-9977
Agency: Transportation

May 4, 2006 - -The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will once again sponsor its popular "The Sky's the Limit" workshop for teachers. MDOT says some spaces still remain for the workshop, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday, May 20 at MDOT's Aeronautics building at Capital City Airport in Lansing. The day's activities are planned to give educators of all grade levels an opportunity to explore the many ways aviation and aerospace concepts can be incorporated into classroom activities. The workshop is appropriate for anyone with an interest in aviation and space, including students.

Workshop participants will hear from Dr. Brian Gilchrist, a pioneer in the research of tethered satellites. He is associate chair and professor of electrical engineering at the University of Michigan. They also will see a performance by Bessie Coleman of the Federal Aviation Administration, who is known for her award-winning portrait of Bessie Coleman, the country's first African-American pilot.

Afternoon breakout sessions include a "Starlab" planetarium, model rocket construction, NASA aviation resources, and the opportunity to take an actual introductory flight (weather permitting) with a certified flight instructor.

The cost of the workshop is $40 and includes lunch and free parking. For more information, contact Tom Krashen of the department's Aviation Services Division at 517-335-9977. You also can register for the conference online at www.michigan.gov/aero
