Contact:  Bill Shreck, Director, MDOT Office of Communications, 517-335-3084
Agency: Transportation

June 15, 2006 - - Michigan Aeronautics Commissioner Joyce Woods of Linden is participating in the annual Air Race Classic (ARC). The race begins June 20, 2006, at Falcon Field, in Mesa, Ariz., and finishes at Twin County Airport, in Menominee, Mich., on June 23.

Woods is flying as a member of the "Tiger Ladies" team with Mary Creason of Grand Haven, Mich., and Port Orange, Fla. Creason, who is the former assistant deputy director of the Michigan Department of Transportation Bureau of Aeronautics, was inducted this spring into the Michigan Transportation Hall of Honor. Gloria Apple of Grass Valley, Calif., is the third member of the team.

Woods was appointed to the Michigan Aeronautics Commission in 2006 by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm. Currently president of the Michigan Aviation Association, Woods is new to air racing, but brings private pilot skills to the team. Creason has completed 27 long cross- country air races and has placed First, Third and Fourth in the ARC. Apple, born in Detroit, claims Michigan as her native state. The Tiger plane they will race will wear "Fly Michigan" prop covers when at rest.

The ARC is flown during daylight hours under visual flight conditions. The winner is the team that averages the highest ground speed in relation to their handicap. The cross-country race is held annually for stock model airplanes of 145-570 horsepower. Thirty-five entries with 75 pilots and five pilot/passengers are entered into this year's competition. The race is open to women pilots only.
