Space shuttle commander to headline May 18 teachers' conference in Lansing

Former astronaut to share experiences from Russian space station Mir

WHO: Col. Kenneth D. Cameron, veteran astronaut who flew aboard three space shuttle missions from 1991 to 1995, including docking with the Russian space station Mir. Col. Cameron, who commanded two of the missions and logged 560 hours in space, will recall his 12-year career with NASA and help K-12 teachers explore aviation and aerospace concepts aimed at motivating students. Also scheduled is Jerry Pahl, education director of the Kalamazoo Air Zoo, who will presenting an entertaining and educational program on the science of flight.

NOTE: Former astronaut Kathryn D. Sullivan, previously announced as a speaker, canceled due to an unavoidable scheduling conflict.

WHAT: 9th Annual Aviation /Aerospace Teacher Workshop. Conducted by teachers for teachers, the workshop will feature a variety or presentations aimed at sparking student interest in science, math, reading, geography, and other subjects. Topics include computer flight simulation, NASA education resources, NASA/Joint Propulsion Lab activities, and an introductory flight (weather permitting). A sell-out crowd of more than 180 teachers is expected.

(The building is on the east side of Capital City Boulevard, just north
of the railroad tracks.)

* Col. Kenneth Cameron speaks at 9 a.m.
* Jerry Pahl speaks at 10:45 a.m.
* Introductory flights begin at 12:45 a.m.
