The Michigan Department of Transportation and the Wayne County Family Independence Agency will share the $256,000 cost of a pilot shuttle service for Detroit Metropolitan Airport employees who depend upon public transportation to get to their jobs. The funds will provide three vans and 12 months of operating expenditures. The vans will operate seven days a week by Job Access Reverse Commute, service providers. JARC operations are coordinated through the Detroit Employment and Training Department, a Michigan Works! Agency.
The van service provides for flexible transportation alternatives in areas and at times not currently covered by the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART). The service is expected to begin in December 2002.
"Dependable transportation to and from work is a convenience many of us take for granted. To some, it can be a barrier that prevents them from finding a job," said state transportation director, Gregory J. Rosine. "This pilot program is an excellent example of how MDOT partners with other state and local agencies to provide new and innovative solutions to transportation needs statewide."
The van service will be provided at no cost to eligible recipients. A fee structure will be developed based on ability to pay for others wishing to use the service. For more information contact Jennifer Davis at 313-876-0584, ext. 219.
