The Michigan Aeronautics Commission has approved more than $13 million in grants to improve the state's system of public-use airports. The purchase of snow-removal equipment, security enhancements and runway restoration projects will now be possible at various airports across the state. "Investing in our system of airports is vital to the state and national economy and central to our transportation mission," said Director of Multi-modal Transportation Services Bureau Rob Abent. "Keeping airports open for use and as safe as possible is our highest priority. These projects are key in continuing the flow of goods and people in a safe and reliable manner."
The commission approved funds for the following projects:
$166,667 to Padgham Field in Allegan for the rehabilitation of the existing T-hanger apron, connecting taxiways, and construction of a new T-hanger apron.
$166,667 to Antrim County Airport in Bellaire for the purchase of snow removal equipment.
$166,667 to Wexford County Airport in Cadillac for snow removal equipment.
$166,667 to Otsego County Airport in Gaylord for the purchase of snow removal equipment.
$310,850 to Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport in Gladwin for the construction of a partial parallel taxiway.
$166,667 to Roscommon County Airport in Houghton Lake for the construction of an apron expansion and taxistreets.
$1,983,450 to Livingston County Airport in Howell for site preparation for the northeast hangar and terminal area.
$166,000 to Jackson County-Reynolds Field in Jackson for the preliminary engineering phases for a new runway, the shifting and extending of a runway, and the environmental assessment for the shifting and extending of a runway.
$166,667 to LakeviewGriffith Field in Lakeview for the second phase of the construction of taxistreets and apron rehabilitation and approach clearing.
$1,470,000 to Dupont-Lapeer Airport in Lapeer for the construction of a a runway, and the relocation and extension of a runway.
$961,300 to Mason County Airport in Ludington for the construction of an apron extension, installation of Precision Approach Path Indicators and Runway End Identifier lights, and runway safety area improvements.
$4,320,000 to Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport in Oscoda for the construction of a fuel storage system, construction of T-hangars, the rehabilitation and expansion of a hangar,the rehabilitation of four additional hangars and the purchase of snow removal equipment.
$1,095,000 to St. Clair County International Airport in Port Huron for the rehabilitation and expansion of a portion of the terminal apron.
$1,185,600 to Presque Isle County-Rogers City Airport in Rogers City for the rehabilitation and extension of a runway.
$333,334 to Mackinac County Airport in Saint Ignace for the rehabilitation and expansion of the terminal apron.
$307,000 to White Could Airport in White Cloud for the construction, rehabilitation,widening and lighting of a runway.
The commission's decision clears the way for issuance of the federal portion of the funds. Federal and state dollars for airport development come primarily from restricted, user-generated funds. The primary sources of revenue are aviation fuel, passenger taxes and aircraft registration fees.
