The Michigan Aeronautics Commission has approved more than $38 million in grants to improve the state's system of public-use airports. The purchase of snow-removal equipment, security enhancements and runway restoration projects will now be possible at various airports across the state. "Continually improving all facets of our transportation system is essential," said State Transportation Director Gregory J. Rosine. "The routine act of snow removal may seem insignificant, but it is important to remember that airports are a vital factor in Michigan's economy. Keeping as many open as possible during all seasons must be a high priority."
The commission approved funds for the following projects:
– $166,667 to Ann Arbor Municipal Airport in Ann Arbor for the second phase of new access road, apron expansion and fencing.
– $1,975,556 to Southwest Michigan Regional Airport in Benton Harbor for land acquisition for runway extension and improved runway safety areas.

– $71,500 to South Haven Regional Airport in South Haven for the design of a runway extension, including parallel taxiway and lighting.
The commission's decision clears the way for issuance of the federal portion of the funds. Federal and state dollars for airport development come primarily from restricted, user-generated funds. The primary sources of revenue are aviation fuel, passenger taxes and aircraft registration fees.
