| There are Three Steps to Register Your Aircraft |
There are three steps that need to be taken to properly register your aircraft with the Federal government and the State of Michigan. All forms listed below can be obtained by telephoning (517) 335-9719, sending the form below, or writing MDOT, Bureau of Aeronautics and Freight Services, 2700 E. Airport Service Drive, Lansing, MI. 48906-2171.
- Register your aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration by completing the aircraft registration form 8050-1 and the Bill of Sale form 8050-2 and return it to the FAA in Oklahoma City along with the $5.00 registration fee (address on form).
- Register your aircraft with the Michigan Department of Transportation, Bureau of Aeronautics and Freight Services, by completing the Michigan Aircraft Registration form M-4004 and returning it to MDOT along with the registration fee of 1 cent per pound based on the maximum gross weight of the aircraft (address on form; envelope furnished).
- Pay use tax to the Michigan Department of Treasury. To determine if you owe use tax, go to the Department of Treasury's Aircraft website (form 1989) or call the Aircraft Unit, Discovery and Tax Enforcement Division, at (517) 636-4120.
