Register Your Aircraft

There are three steps to properly register your aircraft with the Federal government and the State of Michigan.

  1. Register your aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration by completing the FAA aircraft registration Form 8050-1 and the FAA Bill of Sale Form 8050-2 and return it to the FAA in Oklahoma City along with the $5.00 registration fee (address on form).
  2. Register your aircraft with the Michigan Department of Transportation, Office of Aeronautics, by completing the Michigan Aircraft Registration Form M-4004 and returning it to MDOT along with the registration fee of 1 cent per pound based on the maximum gross weight of the aircraft (address on form; envelope furnished). To pay in person, call 517-335-9719 to schedule an appointment. Pay your registration online.
  3. Pay use tax to the Michigan Department of Treasury. To determine if you owe use tax, visit the Department of Treasury's Aircraft website (Form 1989) or call the Aircraft Unit, Discovery and Tax Enforcement Division, at 517-636-4120.
