Contact:  Matt Frendeway, Media Contact 517-373-8060
Agency: Attorney General

February 2,  2009

    LANSING - Attorney General Mike Cox today announced the conviction of Detroit Police officer Kevin Schuh on four felony counts in connection to an auto fraud ring that the Attorney General and the Michigan State Police broke up in 2007.

    "This case is particularly troubling because offender is a police officer - sworn to uphold the law, not betray it," said Cox.  "My office will continue to pursue those who violate the law and the public trust."

    The Attorney General's office began investigating Schuh, 36, of Brown City, after discovering his name was connected to several accident reports at a body shop owned by a person alleged to be associated with an auto fraud ring.  Cox's office, in conjunction with the Michigan State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, worked with the Detroit Police Department's Internal Affairs Division on this case.

    Schuh was implicated in the writing and submitting of false UD-10 police accident reports to support multiple fraudulent insurance claims.  The accidents either never occurred or did not occur in the manner described in the police reports.  Schuh was convicted of include:

  • Misconduct in Office (5-year felony);
  • Forgery (14-year felony);
  • Uttering & Publishing (14-year felony); and,
  • Insurance Fraud (10-year felony).

    Schuh is facing up to 14 years, and is scheduled to be sentenced on February 25, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. before Judge Annette Berry, Third Circuit Court.
