LANSING -Attorney General Mike Cox today made the following statement regarding the recent conviction of Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers:

"As of Friday, June 26, 2009, Monica Conyers stands convicted of conspiracy to commit bribery in connection with her position as a member of the Detroit City Council.

As a result of that conviction, Monica Conyers has vacated her office by the operation of state law.

My office will respect Detroit City Council President Ken Cockrel's attempt to resolve the situation.  However, if Conyers does not resign tomorrow, my office will take court action to remove her from office.

My interest is ensuring that the law is followed."  

On Friday, June 26, 2009, Detroit City Council-woman Monica Conyers pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to commit bribery.  Attorney General Cox cited MCL 201.3, which says that upon conviction of a felony, the office is automatically vacated.  If Conyers does not resign tomorrow, Cox's office will move according to state statute to remove her from office.
