Emergency Legal Preparedness Exercise Overview

In the event of a natural or man-made disaster or emergency, a myriad of legal issues are certain to arise. Attorney General Cox, as Chair of the Homeland Security Committee of the National Association of Attorneys General, is committed to ensuring that our nation's public lawyers are fully prepared to respond to legal issues relating to an emergency. In February of 2004, the Attorney General executed a tabletop exercise prepared by his office, along with the Centers for Disease Control and the Michigan Department of Community Health. The exercise is designed to increase awareness and improve an agency's ability to respond to legal issues that may arise during an emergency. The exercise can be adapted for any state's unique statutory scheme and is intended to involve lawyers, health and hospital officials, and representatives of various governmental agencies. Attorney General Cox encourages other legal departments to use the exercise to test their legal preparedness and to check the various legal resources available at this site.
