Contact:  John Sellek or Nick De Leeuw 517-373-8060

September 22, 2009

LANSING -Attorney General Mike Cox today made the following statement after his office assisted in a legal victory before the Michigan Court of Appeals in which the court directed the City of Detroit Clerk to place a proposal to elect the Detroit City Council primarily by district before the voters on the November 3rd ballot:

"We joined this suit in support of thousands of Detroit residents who are rightfully seeking to let voters decide how their city representatives are chosen.  The citizens of Detroit are winners today because they will be empowered to make their government more responsible for its actions."

The order in the case of Detroiters for City Council by Districts v. Detroit City Clerk was issued today by a Michigan Court of Appeals panel that consisted of Judges Michael Talbot, Kurtis Wilder, and Christopher Murray.
