Former Westland Clerk Facing Embezzlement Charges

WESTLAND (WWJ) - A former Westland court clerk is facing up to ten years in prison on charges of embezzlement.

WWJ's Sandra McNeill reports that the clerk, 52-year-old Lynn Handzlik, is accused of taking in $2,000 bond payments from police, even signing for them, then keeping the money for herself.

Police claim Handzlike did that three times. The last time, they believe, she was attempting to repay her first embezzlement to avoid being caught.

The case is being brought by Attorney General Bill Schuette's Public Integrity Unit.

"Public service by its nature carries great responsibility," said Schuette. "We are putting people on notice that if you break the law, there will be consequences.  The public will not settle for anything less."

Handzlik is expected to turn herself in to face charges.
