FY 2002 Consumer & Industry Services Budget

Contact:  Kelly Chesney (517) 373-7560
Agency: State Budget

Sept. 28, 2001. Support for nursing homes, child day care, low-income energy assistance and rental housing support highlight the $569 million fiscal year 2002 budget bill for the Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS) signed into law today by Governor John Engler.

“This budget helps protect some of our state's most vulnerable residents,” commented Engler. “The energy and housing assistance will also ensure that Michigan families have warm roofs over their heads.”

The nearly $569.8 million budget includes nearly $240 million from Federal sources and $286 million in restricted sources. Highlights of the budget include:
  • $60 million in low-income energy assistance grants.
  • Almost $45 million for health regulatory systems and over $26 million to regulate the adult and children foster care systems and the child day care system.
  • Additional support for child day care grants for low and moderate income working parents.
  • Over $115 million to support the Unemployment Agency, to ensure that unemployed workers receive appropriate assistance and services.
  • A $2 million increase in Section 8 grants under MSHDA for rental assistance.

“I applaud the Legislature on their approval of the CIS budget. It took some time and effort, but we were able to ensure that programs that are vitally important to Michigan families during these belt-tightening times are funded,” said Engler.

The Governor also vetoed funding for fire protection grants, commenting, “Given the current economic difficulties in the nation, a 28% increase in funding for this service is unsustainable.”
