The First Ward Community Center in Saginaw is receiving Recovery Act funds from the United Way of Saginaw County through a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The additional money will help the Center provide more meals and services for seniors, children and families in their community during these challenging economic times.
First Ward is an incredible place. We were surprised to see the wide range of services and assistance it provides to the community. The center administers youth and senior food services - both boxed food for community members as well as hot meals - along with educational opportunities and recreational activities.
First Ward provides all the necessities for quality youth development in addition to programs geared at improving adult education through their partnership with Delta College. First Ward encourages youths to express themselves and to dream big. The kids have access to computers, academic materials, and even a small branch of the Saginaw Public Library right on site. An important emphasis is placed on creativity and the arts. The artwork produced by children and young people is displayed throughout the building.
Talking with some of the seniors during our visit, we better understood First Ward's long-term impact. Helen Hughey, known as "Mother of the First Ward," was the first one through the door when the Center first opened in 1936 ? that's a span of more 70 years! Now Ms. Hughey, along with other seniors from the community, are the one's not only using the Center for assistance, but also giving back by volunteering and hosting fundraising activities as part of the First Ward Old-Timers Club.
In light of Michigan's current economic hardship, First Ward stands as a symbol of hope. Our brief visit made us realize the true impact that just one facility can provide to a community. The director and her small staff, along with a group of dedicated volunteers are what true public service is all about. We need more individuals like these to keep a genuinely beneficial and positive establishment running. First Ward addresses social problems and helps alleviate many of the every day concerns faced by citizens in the Saginaw community that it serves. We left feeling inspired and comforted knowing that individuals within the Saginaw area have somewhere to turn for help.
