The Center for Educational Performance and Information (CEPI) has compiled the matrices listed below in order to clearly identify how the data collected through our applications support federal and state reporting requirements. Each CEPI data collection application has its own matrix showing each data field with all of its associated reports. In addition, the matrix also identifies whether the field is required, optional, or required only if relevant (e.g., district authorized users only report Title I eligibility for students who are Title I eligible).
The format for the Michigan Student Data System (MSDS) matrices differs slightly in that there is a summary page, followed by report functional area sheets that provide the detail for each report in that functional area (e.g., Special Education reporting). This format was necessary because of the large number of federal reporting requirements associated with these data. There is a summary sheet which lists functional reporting areas with the number of reports which utilize the data from each field. Each functional area has a detail page that lists all included reports with the associated data fields. To allow users to easily navigate to the corresponding detail page, each functional area on the summary page is hyperlinked. Simply click the column heading to move to that area's detail page.
The MSDS matrix also includes a "Notes" page that identifies other processes which utilize the data collected in the MSDS and are beneficial to supporting education. For example, using the student information from the MSDS, CEPI matches students with information provided by the Department of Human Services to identify children who are eligible for free meals without any further application. This process has resulted in directly certifying more than 550,000 children this school year (approximately 85 percent of all free eligible children) and identifying approximately 25,000-40,000 new children each month.
To access additional information about federal reporting requirements, please refer to the Education Data Exchange Network (EDEN) report specifications. Every report submitted via EDEN has a report code preceding the report name in the matrices (e.g., N079 Accountability, under the non-XML specifications for a given school year). We have included hyperlinks in these names to the applicable specifications and instructions governing each particular report on the U.S. Department of Education Web site.
