(1) Go to http://factfinder2.census.gov/
(2) Click on the "Geographies" button on the left hand side of the window. (A good general rule of thumb is to always select your geographies first.)
(3) On the left hand side of the new "Select Geographies" window that pops up, look in the"Geographic Type" list to see if the level of geography that you need is in the list of common geographic types. For example, to obtain information for one or more census tracts you would click on "Census Tract" and then perform steps (c), (d), (e), and (g) below.
If you need information on levels of geography that are not listed, such as elementary school districts and unified school districts, you would:
(a) Click on "Summary Level" (which is the next major heading below "Geographic Type") to see a list of all available levels of geography.
(b) Click on "950-School District, Elementary" near the bottom of the new list that drops down.
(c) Click on "Within State" and "Michigan" if you want to limit the results to Michigan districts. ("Within State" is the next major heading below "Summary Level.")
(d) Then, in the "Geography Results" area in the right hand portion of the window, either check the box for all districts within Michigan or else check the boxes next to the individual district(s) that you want.
TIP: The "Geography Results" area can sometimes have hundreds or even thousands of entries, and it is not always feasible to scroll through it to find the areas that are needed. You can narrow the results with the filters on the left side of the "Select Geographies" window (e.g. "Within County," "Within County Subdivision," etc.)
(e) click on the "Add" button (which you will find at both the top and the bottom of the window).
(f) Repeat steps (a) through (e), but this time choose "970-School District, Unified" in step (b).
(g) Click on the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the "Select Geographies" window to close it.
(4) Under the "Topics" heading on the left hand side of the window, click on the "plus" sign next to "Dataset" and then click on "2010 Demographic Profile SF."
(5) In the "Search Results" portion of the window, check the box next to "Profile of General Population and Housing Characteristics: 2010" and also the box next to "Geographic Identifiers."
(6) Click on the "Download" button (which you will find at the bottom of the "Search Results" area) and then click on the new "Download" button which appears in the Download Progress window.
(7) Locate the ".zip" archive that you just downloaded (if it does not pop up automatically) and then open the largest .csv file in the archive. That is where you will find your data.
