Issuance of License

Following completion of the exam, applicants must electronically answer the same background questions as those that are on the application for licensure. Per the Michigan Insurance Code, MCL 500.1239(1) "In addition to any other powers under this act, the commissioner may place on probation, suspend, revoke, or refuse to issue an insurance producer's license or may levy a civil fine ... for ... (a) Providing incorrect, misleading, incomplete, or materially untrue information in the license application. ..." See also, MCL 500.1214(2), 1224(2), 1234(3), and 1242(2).

A letter may be issued requesting additional information. Upon passing an insurance examination, providing proof of any necessary prelicensing education and passing a background check, a license is issued within 14 days and the individual will receive a permanent license at his or her mailing address.

A producer shall not sell, solicit or negotiate until issuance of the license. An individual or agency may not act as an agent of an insurer unless the producer becomes appointed with that insurer (MCL 500.1208). Any prospective insurance employer may access the Insurance Licensee Locator (www.michigan.gov/ofir, under Featured Services) to verify the individual is properly licensed. Also see Appointments/Cancellations.
