Asbestos Awareness
Construction trades routinely renovate and demolish buildings that were built prior to 1981. These construction activities often result in contact with asbestos-containing materials. Asbestos Awareness Training is required annually for employees whose work activities may contact asbestos-containing materials (ACM) or presumed asbestos-containing materials (PACM), but do not disturb ACM or PACM during their work activities. This training consists of information regarding asbestos and its various use and forms. Training also includes information on the health effects associated with asbestos exposure.

Dealing with Workplace Violence
Workplace violence is an important safety and health hazard in many industries and places of employment. MIOSHA’s “General Duty Clause” requires employers to provide a workplace free of recognized hazards; therefore, it is appropriate for employers to take feasible steps to prevent or abate potential hazards associated with violence. By addressing workplace violence as a preventable hazard, employers will learn how to develop practical and effective strategies to protect their employees from this risk, and provide a safe and healthful workplace.

Extreme Safety: Youth Worker Initiative
MIOSHA is focusing a new initiative on the safety and health of young workers. Young workers experience higher rates of work-related injuries than other workers. NIOSH estimates that at least 100,000 young workers nationwide seek treatment in an emergency room for a work-related injury each year. NIOSH research also estimates that annually, at least 70 young people are killed nationwide on the job, which is double the fatality rate of adult workers. To eliminate these tragic deaths and other serious accidents we must ensure that working teens have the information and education needed to perform work safely. This program will provide information on teen workers rights & responsibilities, will introduce teens to hazards associated with work operations commonly employing teen workers, and will provide information on various resources teen workers can utilize to obtain additional information and assistance.
