JMF Closure Update

The MDOC is moving forward with prerparations for the closure of the Southern Michigan Correctional Facility (JMF) and 7 Block of the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center (RGC) as soon as possible.

The prisoner population at JMF has decreased through attrition and, as recently authorized by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, lateral transfers. JMF's inmate population has declined by about 500 since the closing announcement was made on February 20. Medical staff are done assessing the appropriate medical needs of the remaining JMF inmates.  Our goal is to assure appropriate placement of inmates to match their medical and custody needs.

The transfer of the JMF dialysis unit back to Ryan Correctional Facility (RRF) on June 8 and 9 went smoothly and the unit continues to operate.

There have been some modifications and additions to the steps in the closure process:

1. The prisoner store will not shut down but will continue operating until the facility closes.

2. 4 Block's A-pod closed last week. The rest of 4 Block is expected to be empty and permanently closed by July 30;

3. JMF's school programs will continue operating until the facility closes.

Keep checking the F.Y.I. for additional updates on the progress of closing of Southern Michigan Correctional Facility and 7 Block of the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center.
