Sex Offender Management

Sex Offender Management

Michigan established "sex offender specific" caseloads in 1996 to assist Parole and Probation agents in specializing in the supervision of sex offenders.

Parolees or probationers that are serving for sex offenses are monitored more intensively than non sex offenders.   Conditions of parole and probation are tailored in a manner to best fit the needs of the offender and to assist with the protection of the public from further victimization.

Examples of supervision conditions that may be ordered on this population by the Sentencing Judge or Michigan Parole Board are:

  • No contact with children
  • No use of computers
  • Comply with the Sex Offender Registration Act
  • Not be within 1,000 feet of schools
  • Complete approved sex offender treatment
  • Electronic Monitoring
  • Polygraph Examinations

The Department of Corrections is aware of the new challenges with the Internet and is pro-active in monitoring social networking sites for sex offenders.

"Sex offender specific" polygraphs are being used in different areas within the State to assist with identifying risk and monitoring offender behavior.

New legislation requires that identified sex offenders be placed on global positioning monitoring system.   The Michigan Department of Corrections also requires additional sex offenders that are not required by statute are also monitored through electronic monitoring.

Sex offender management is a collaboration of agencies with the Parole and Probation agents to ensure that this population receives the treatment and supervision that they need to remain in the community productively and offense free.
