To obtain employment with the Michigan Department of Corrections there are various methods in which to apply. Efforts to enhance recruitment methods for the state of Michigan have resulted in improvements in the job application processes at the Department of Civil Service. Several jobs that previously required a Civil Service examination will be filled using alternative application processes that are described below. Examinations for Corrections positions that will continue to be given in either a written or computerized manner are listed below:
-
Exam #4081- Corrections Supervisors (State Employees only-Assistant Resident Unit Supervisor, Corrections Security Inspector, Corrections Shift Supervisor, and Resident Unit Manager)
-
Exam #5029- Administrative Support (Secretary, General Office Assistant, Executive Secretary, Legal Secretary, Word Processing Assistant, Accounting Assistant, Personnel Management Assistant, Data Coding Operator, and more clerical jobs)
-
Exam #9031- Supervisors (Office Supervisor, Departmental Supervisor, Physical Plant Supervisor, Electrician Supervisor, Janitor Supervisor and more supervisory jobs)
For these jobs, the Department of Civil Service administers an exam, and maintains an applicant pool that state agencies utilize when they have vacancies.
For the remaining classifications, a vacancy driven process is in place. Applicants must apply for each vacancy they are interested in applying for.
Civil Service Web Site Vacancy Posting System - many jobs will be posted on the Civil Service Vacancy posting system. The Vacancy Posting System is the state's electronic "Want Ads." Applicants can apply electronically for specific vacancies through this system. This application process usually involves sending a resume, cover letter and , perhaps, copies of college transcripts or professional licenses to the hiring department by a certain date.
Individual Agency Vacancy Postings - Along with the Civil Service Vacancy Posting System, MDOC Current Openings
posts all vacancies on their own web site. Many other agencies have their own web site job vacancy posting system as well.
NOTE: Applying for employment using any of these methods does not guarantee that you will be contacted by the department for further consideration.
