Legal Services

There are many reasons why employees may need legal services. An estimated 90 percent of the population needs legal assistance at one time or another for things like money issues, buying and/or selling real estate, credit problems, tenant/landlord difficulties, bankruptcy and debt. Other reasons may include family matters such as divorce, child support and custody issues, taking care of senior citizens, powers of attorney, and will preparation. Following are agencies that can help you with legal matters:

- State Bar of Michigan, Michigan On-line Self Help Center. This site helps Michigan citizens find lawyers and/or get information about Michigan laws. Visit their Web site at www.michbar.org/generalinfo/libraries/selfhelp.cfm.

- State Bar of Michigan, Consumer Tips and Alerts. If you have questions about legal matters, this agency's Web site provides information about lawyers, and offers links to other sites about legal issues. Visit their Web site at www.michbar.org/public_resources/consumertips.cfm/

- AARP, Legal Services Network (LSN). This group of independent lawyers meets LSN standards of experience and customer service. They will help AARP members with legal services for a fraction of the cost of a private practice attorney. Visit their Web site at www.aarp.org.

- UNITED WAY at 2-1-1. This is a free telephone number that connects people with community resources. The 2-1-1 call specialists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide information on community services such as health care, job training, mortgage foreclosure assistance, rent/utility assistance, food, legal assistance, shelter, support groups and more. If you have a life-threatening emergency, please call 9-1-1!
