Director Caruso announces new Vision and Mission Statements

Director Patricia L. Caruso has approved new language for the department’s vision and mission statements.

The language was drafted by members of a work group of the Vision and Values Action Committee representing all areas of the department and was reviewed by Executive Policy Team members who made additional recommendations.

 Vision Statement

Our vision: Integrity, Excellence, Inclusion and Teamwork guide the ways we protect Michigan's citizens.

Mission Statement

Our mission is keeping Michigan's citizens and our staff safe by providing effective supervision in our prison facilities and  communities.

The new vision and mission statements will be published in the next Employee Handbook and will be the basis for a revised statement of purpose policy to be published soon.

"The new statements are intentionally direct so that they get to the point and are memorable," said Darlene Schimmel, committee co-chair.

In addition to new vision and mission statements, the committee developed a ten question input request that was made available to every MDOC employee. Data was compiled from the 1,654 input requests that were returned to them.

From those replies the committee identified common themes and concerns and will soon provide a report to the director.

A short-term and long-term action plan to address those concerns will then be developed combining the four core values of Integrity, Excellence, Inclusion and Teamwork.
