The American Cancer Society (ACS) holds the Great American Smokeout each November to help smokers quit cigarettes for at least one day, in hopes they will quit forever. This year’s event will be held on November 17, 2005.
Today, an estimated 46 million US adults smoke. Smoking is responsible for one in three cancer deaths, and one in five deaths from all causes. Another 8.6 million people are living with serious illnesses caused by smoking. Tobacco use can cause lung cancer, as well as other cancers, heart disease, and lung disease.
