Mary L. Meatte, an
officer at the Saginaw Corrections Center since 1989, has bee chosen 1994
Corrections Officer of the Year in Michigan. In 1988, she was chosen National
Officer of the Year while employed at Camp Tuscola.
Meatte's selection
was made by a committee made up of the Michigan Correctional Officers'
Training Council. She was one of five finalists chosen by a committee
made of former officers of the year, the president of MCO, a prison inspector
and a Department trainer.
Meatte, who has often
changed her work schedule to benefit the operations of the corrections
center, has created and maintains a computerized misconduct log which staff
depend on, say center officials. She is frequently asked to make presentations
on correctional issues to the community because of her excellent communications
skills, says John Belson, administrator of Region II.
Meatte and the other
finalists as well as all officers nominated for the award will be honored
at a May 3 banquet in East Lansing. National Corrections Officer Week
will be celebrated during the week of May 1 through May 7.
