Training Division
  • Training Division The Training Division is responsible for developing and providing both initial new employee training and in-service training for status employees.

    The Training Division establishes standards for training and assists the Department by planning, evaluating, developing and presenting training materials to improve employee performance, skills and knowledge.

    All Department employees are required to attend new employee training and yearly in-service training. This training includes updates on basic correctional programs, as well as programs required by Department policy, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration , the Michigan Occupational Safety & Health Administration (MIOSHA) , and other outside agencies that impact on the Department. Training for corrections officers also follows additional guidelines as established by state law.

    The Recruitment Section is responsible for the screening, selection, and hiring of all new Corrections Officers. The section coordinates recruitment efforts for all classifications, ensuring diversity of the Department's workforce.

  • Annual Training Requirements All employees of the Michigan Department of Corrections are required to attend and successfully complete annual in-service training.
  • Leadership Training Unit The Leadership Training Unit provides a wide array of training to the Department's current and future leaders.
New Employee Training
  • New Corrections Officer Training Curriculum The training curriculum for new corrections officers is as follows:
  • New Corrections Officer Training New employee training for corrections officers is required by statute (Public Act 415) and Department policy. The training curriculum prepares a participant to become certified as a Correctional Officer under the Michigan Correctional Officers Training Council standards. The training curriculum covers a broad range of correctional topics such as communication skills, searches, use of force, self-defense, and first aid/CPR.
  • New Employee Training in the MDOC New employee training ranges from orientation for contractual employees to 320 hours for custody officers.
  • Non-Custody New Employee Training (All Other Employees) The curriculum for the non-custody new employee training program is divided into five (5) different programs - A, B, C, D and E.
  • New Field Agent/Field Service Assistants Training Program The new field agent and field service assistants training program consists of four (4) phases encompassing three weeks of classroom training and seven weeks of on-the-job training. Phase IV is initial handgun training for new field agents and field service assistants who elect to carry a handgun.
