Governor Granholm Makes Appointments, Designates Chair

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointment to the State Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board and appointment and designation to the Cervical Cancer Task Force:
 
State Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board

Tamara D. Vander Ark of Grand Haven, union representative for UFCW 951.  Ms. Vander Ark is appointed to represent organized labor for a term expiring December 19, 2007.  She succeeds Elaine A. Crawford whose term has expired.

The State Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board, also known as the Children’s Trust Fund, is responsible for developing a plan to distribute funds to statewide education programs that work to develop awareness about child abuse and neglect.
 
This appointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
 
Cervical Cancer Task Force

Robert C. Burack, M.D., M.P.H. of Ann Arbor, professor of internal medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.  Dr. Burack is appointed to represent oncologists for a term expiring at the pleasure of the Governor.

Senator Deborah Cherry of Burton.  Senator Cherry was originally appointed to the Cervical Cancer Task Force in February of 2006 and is designated to serve as the chairperson for a term expiring at the pleasure of the Governor.

The Cervical Cancer Task Force, established by Executive Order 2006-5, is charged with reviewing existing state efforts regarding cervical cancer awareness; identifying and making recommendations to promote effective communications efforts at state and local levels to increase awareness of the importance of regular cervical cancer screenings; and making recommendations for the development of a comprehensive statewide plan to generate public awareness of the importance of regular cervical cancer screenings.  A final report with recommendations is to be presented to the Governor by September 30, 2006.
 
These appointments are not subject to disapproval.
