Online Banking

Tips for safe online banking
  • Always visit your bank's website by opening a new browser window and clearly typing the website URL into the address bar of your browser.
  • Read your bank's security statement/policy.
  • Make sure your bank uses SSL (Secure Socket Layer) technology to secure your username, password and transactions. Usually mentioned in the security statement/policy.
  • Once you have logged on to your bank's website you can determine that SSL is being used on the site by looking for two items:
    • A small padlock icon, usually in the lower right corner of your Web browser window. A closed, or locked padlock indicates a secure connection.
    • https:// -- in the address line of your browser. (https stands for hyper text transfer protocol over secure socket layer)
  • Remember to “log-out” of the web site and close your browser once you have completed your online banking.
  • Change your passwords regularly.
Never...
  • Never click on a link that you received through email to visit your bank's website. Be cautious about phishing and pharming attempts.
  • Never respond to any email that asks you to verify your bank account number, username or password. Make it a practice NOT to respond to any unsolicited emails.
  • Never click off an advertisement or a pop up to visit your bank's website.
  • Never access a banking website on a public computer.
