• Internet Safety for Kids
Our current generation of young people will be the first raised in the Internet era. As time goes on, their lives will become more and more "Web-based" through social networking, information retrieval, commerce, and connecting with family and friends. Thus, we must teach them about online safety and security early on in life to give them the skills they will need throughout life. Being safe and secure online is not only about the technology but includes good decision making, critical thinking skills, and treating others with respect. We don't teach children to drive by giving them the keys to the car and expecting them to be "self-taught." Similarly, we shouldn't let them sit down at the computer and surf away without training and supervision. At times, it may seem our children know more about the Internet and technology then we do, but they still need guidance. There is a difference between being cyber savvy and knowing how to use technology safely. Young people need advice, guidance, and protection. Talk openly; let your child know that you can be approached with any questions they may have.
