The Department of Natural Resources and Environment today announced the approval of 52 Coastal Zone Management (CZM) grants totaling $1,405,573 to be used by coastal communities, nonprofit organizations, state agencies, and universities to fund a variety of shoreline-related projects that will allow Michigan to better manage and protect our valuable Great Lakes coastal resources.
"We are very pleased to announce these grants that will help enhance public access to coastal areas, encourage coastal stewardship, provide funding for habitat research and sand dune protection studies," said DNRE Director Rebecca Humphries. "Michigan's coastal areas are a source of pride to our citizens and these grants will help local communities better manage these areas."
Funding for this grant program was provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration through the DNRE's Coastal Management Program (CMP). Grants require match in an amount equal to the grant, while the project selection is competitive and based on how well each project meets the CMP objectives.
The CMP has allowed the DNRE to improve the administration of state coastal regulatory programs and provide financial and technical assistance to local units of government to address shoreline issues and improve their coastal resources. This annual funding is the result of a state and federal partnership established through the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972.
A complete list of the funded projects can be viewed on the CMP Web site at http://tiny.cc/X7uYN.
The DNRE is committed to conserve, manage, protect, and promote accessible use and enjoyment of the state's environmental, natural resource, and related economic interests for current and future generations.
