Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that Elm Plating Company-Plant 1 in Jackson has been designated as a Michigan Clean Corporate Citizen.
Elm Plating’s Plant 1 on South Elm Street becomes the 64th facility to receive the honor. The facility specializes in high-production metal finishing for automotive and non-automotive industries.
“I am pleased to recognize the Elm Plating Company for achievement at their Elm Street facility,” Granholm said. “They are committed to maintaining and improving their environmental systems and seeking new opportunities to reduce waste and share the pollution prevention message.”
“Elm Plating Company and its employees are elated and take great pride in this recognition by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality,” said James M. McCluskey, President and CEO. “This has been accomplished over the years through major efforts related to environmental responsibility and improvements. It is one of Elm’s major goals to continue to lead our industry in environmental stewardship.”
To qualify as a Clean Corporate Citizen, candidates must adopt a strong environmental management system, a facility-specific pollution prevention policy and program, and have a consistent record of compliance with applicable environmental requirements. Designations are valid for one year and must be renewed annually.
Elm Plating Company earned International Standards Organization 14001 certification, meeting the voluntary international standard for environmental management systems. The facility also has voluntarily joined the Department of Environmental Quality as a partner in the Michigan Business Pollution Prevention Partnership, according to DEQ Director Steven Chester.
“Elm Plating has made a strong commitment to continual improvement, waste reduction, and managing all aspects of their operation with an eye toward protecting the environment,” said Chester. “I applaud the management and staff for taking their environmental responsibilities seriously and for joining the DEQ in voluntary pollution prevention efforts.”
