LOCATION: The site is located on the northeast section of Loxley Road and Heights View Drive in Houghton Lake Heights. The facility is currently a vacant parcel of land approximately 50' X 50'.
SITE HISTORY: The site was operated as a gasoline station until sometime in the 1970's. In 1981, the property was sold and it is unclear whether it continued to be operated as a gasoline station. In 1987, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) received the property due to non-payment of property taxes. The DNR contracted with Roscommon Township in 1989 to oversee the removal of four underground storage tanks (UST's) from the property. DNR staff were on site during the removal of the UST's. Samples collected from the excavation indicated soils were contaminated with gasoline compounds. Contaminated soils were not removed at the time and remained on site.
CLEANUP ACTIONS: Just over $25,000 in CMI funds were used for excavation and disposal of soil from the former tank cavity. A total of 360 cubic yards of contaminated soil has been excavated and disposed. Verification samples were obtained and the site was restored to its original condition.
REDEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL: The property is located one block from Houghton Lake. It is currently held by the Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority which may transfer the property to the local unit of government and be developed as a parking lot for surrounding businesses, an urban park, or a small commercial business venture.
