SITE NAME: Western Machine Tool
255 Kollen Park Drive
Holland, MI
ID #: 7000367
|
|
LOCATION: This 1.5 acre site is located on Lake Macatawa in the western part of the City of Holland. Kollen Park lies directly west of the property. Interconnected buildings housing the former production plant covered the site. The area surrounding the property is primarily a mix between residential and industrial. The area is served by a municipal water supply.
SITE HISTORY: Western Machine Tool Works had been the sole industrial occupant of the property since this location was developed in the early 1900's. Former operations were described to include metal cutting and finishing, painting, assembly and wood pattern preparation. Production at the company ceased in 1989. The City purchased the property in 1994, although the Company did not file a Certificate of Dissolution until 1996. This parcel is proposed to be part of the City's downtown redevelopment plan. A Phase l and II Environmental Assessment was performed on the property, which revealed the presence of PCBs in flooring material, capacitors and transformers containing PCB oil, friable asbestos, approximately 20 drums containing waste, and oil stained floors in the main building.
CLEANUP ACTIONS: Nearly $368,000 of CMI funds were used for removal of the drums of waste and other contaminated media on-site as well as demolishing the building. Results of soil, groundwater, and building materials found little contamination. Building demolition was completed in early 1994.
REDEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL: This city-owned site is located in a highly developable waterfront area and is recommended by the City of Holland for redevelopment. The City has solicited several proposals from developers, including a mixed use development and a hotel and marina.

Site Name: ASP & Mfg., Inc.
702 N. Sixth Street
Grand Haven, MI
Site ID: 70000065
|
|
LOCATION: ASP & Manufacturing Company was located on the South Channel of the Grand River in the city of Grand Haven in an industrial and residential area. The site is approximately 3 to 4 acres in size.
SITE HISTORY: ASP & Manufacturing Company is an electroplating operation utilizing nickel, chromium, and zinc. Copper and cyanide were also used during previous operations. Process waste was formerly discharged to two lagoons located between the manufacturing plant and the South Channel of the Grand River. In the mid 1970's, the most southerly of the two seepage lagoons was filled with a layer of sand and then a top layer of incinerator ash obtained from the Grand Haven-Spring Lake Sewer Authority.
In 1988, MDNR responded to a complaint regarding the release of chromium to the ground surface on the north side of the plant facility. Samples were collected and the results indicated significant concentrations of cadmium, chromium, nickel, zinc, and cyanide in soils and in puddles at the site.
CLEANUP ACTIONS: In the spring of 2000, MDEQ removed the hazardous materials from the two lagoons on site and backfilled the area with clean fill. Over $2,564,000 of state funding has been spent at this site to demolish the 80 year old electroplating building, remove the waste materials inside the building, and remove hazardous soil. Monitoring of the groundwater plume is continuing as contaminated groundwater vents to the Grand River.
REDEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL: The plating operations ceased as of November 2002. The ASP business moved to another location in Grand Haven. ASP has resolved its liabilities with DEQ through an Administrative Order of Consent. The City of Grand Haven has used a waterfront grant to purchase the ASP property as well as the adjacent Ottawa County Road Commission property as part of their brownfield redevelopment efforts.
