Municipal Landfill Grants

Contact:  Susan Erickson 517-241-8707

The Grant and Technical Support Unit of the Superfund Section were also responsible for reviewing the grant applications for municipalities that are liable for response actions at landfill sites on the NPL.  These grants, referred to as Municipal Landfill Cost Share Grants, were used to defray costs incurred by municipalities for mitigation activities.  Staff of the section ensured that applications were for eligible costs and made recommendations for grant awards which provide up to 50 percent of the municipality’s expenditures.  In addition, staff reviewed reported cost recovery by the municipalities and recommended the repayment amount due to the state.  The section was also responsible for development of policy recommendations to the Brownfield Redevelopment Board regarding implementation of the Municipal Landfill Cost-Share Grant Program.

To date, over $9 million in Municipal Landfill Cost Share Grants have been awarded to 11 municipalities in Michigan.  There are no longer available funds for this program.
