LOCATION: Ahmeek is a small village in Keweenaw County. It was a prosperous mining town in the early 1900s with businesses sufficient to support the local population.
SITE HISTORY: Two of the buildings in the downtown district of Ahmeek fell into disrepair and became hazardous structures. One building was once a brewery and the other was called the Malnar Bar. The buildings stood side by side and both had been condemned by the village engineer and the county building inspector.
The Village of Ahmeek requested that Clean Michigan Initiative (CMI) funds be utilized for the demolition and removal of the two hazardous buildings. An environmental assessment to determine whether asbestos, lead, above ground or underground fuel tanks were present had not been performed at the time of this request.
CLEANUP ACTIONS: A total of $195,083 of CMI funds were used to and perform a site assessment and asbestos abatement prior to demolishing the two dangerous buildings. Work was completed in October 2002.
