The Toxic Chemical Release Inventory (TRI) contains information on toxic chemicals released and managed as waste. Reports are submitted annually pursuant to the federal Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act and the data are known as the TRI. Lead and lead compounds are included among the toxic chemicals that must be reported.
The TRI data are made available to the public under Community Right-to-Know and citizens can obtain reported chemical information specific to facilities in their community.
Certain facilities must submit reports annually on specific toxic chemicals and must report the quantities released and managed as waste. Facilities report air releases, discharges to surface waters, disposal to land and to underground injection wells at the facility, and transfers off site for disposal. Facilities also manage waste by transferring it off site to be recycled, used for energy recovery, and treated or as discharges to publicly owned treatment works (POTWs).
Michigan's TRI data is on the Internet and can be searched by facility, by county, and by chemical name. A published summary of the data is also available.
