The Department of Environmental Quality will host a public information meeting on July 27, in Orion Township, Oakland County, to discuss an Administrative Order that directs the former Sanicem Landfill owners and operators to investigate and address the migration of methane gas to nearby properties. The landfill site consists of approximately 145 acres with landfill material on nearly 70 acres. The property is roughly bordered on the east by Bald Mountain Road, on the west by Lapeer Road, on the north by Ellen Drive, and on the south by Superior Court.
DEQ staff will provide information on the known extent of methane migration and describe recommended interim response activities, such as soil testing and methane monitoring.
The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Orion Township Hall, Lower Level Boardroom, 2525 Joslyn Road, Orion Township. DEQ staff will also be present from 5:30-6:30 p.m. to speak personally with community residents about any concerns or questions they might have.
