Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and Department of Environmental Quality Director Steven E. Chester announce the issuance of scrap tire grants to 31 applicants totaling $2.9 million dollars. The Scrap Tire Cleanup Program funds are designated for use toward the complete cleanup of these tire sites in order to reduce the potential public health and environmental concerns, such as fire and mosquitoes, associated with these scrap tire sites. This funding will completely clean up 28 scrap tire sites; provide funding to remove scrap tires creating fire lanes at the site to improve safety and compliance with state law at 3 sites; and clean up approximately 4.2 million scrap tires from sites across the state.
