The Department of Environmental Quality has authorized $250,000 to remove contaminated soil near the Boyne River in Boyne City.
From the 1940s through the 1960s, businesses and residents in the area disposed of solid wastes on the property now referred to as Riverside Park. The three acre disposal area is located within the city limits and borders the Boyne River.
The DEQ has identified polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the soil in concentrations which are unacceptable for prolonged human contact. PCBs are known animal, and probable human, carcinogens.
The DEQ will remove the contaminated soil and conduct site restoration activities. In addition, an investigation of the property will be conducted to ensure that it is suitable for public use before the city incorporates the area into a recreational trail network.
Editor’s note: DEQ news releases are available on the department’s Internet home page at www.michigan.gov/deq.
