May 10 Community Meeting to Focus on Review of Dow Remedial Investigation Work Plans and Sampling Plans for Summer

The Department of Environmental Quality and The Dow Chemical Company will be holding the next quarterly Midland/Saginaw/Bay City (Tri-Cities) Dioxin Community Meeting on Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at the Horizon’s Conference Center, 6200 State Street, Saginaw. The meeting is open to the public and will run from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Staff from the DEQ, Department of Community Health, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Dow, and their consultants, will be available one-half hour before and after the meeting for individual discussion with the public.

The meeting topics will include the following:

• Discussion of the DEQ’s Notices of Deficiency transmitting review
  comments on Dow’s work plans to conduct Remedial Investigations of
  contamination in Midland area soils and the Tittabawassee River and
  floodplain.

• Overview of revised work plans proposed by Dow to conduct sampling
  of Midland area soils and the upper Tittabawassee River and floodplain
  during summer 2006. These documents will be posted to the DEQ
  Web site prior to the Community Meeting.

• Update on Priority 1 flood response and Priority 2 interim response
  activities.

• Time for questions and discussion of these and other topics.

Additional 2006 quarterly Community Meetings are scheduled to be held on August 9 and November 8.
