Consumers Energy JH Campbell Site Earns Clean Corporate Citizen Designation

Department of Environmental Quality Director Steven E. Chester today met with officials at the Consumers Energy JH Campbell Electric Generation Facility in Grand Haven to congratulate them on achieving the designation of Clean Corporate Citizen (C3). The JH Campbell Complex has become Michigan’s 119th Clean Corporate Citizen and Consumers Energy’s 3rd C3 in Michigan.

“Consumers Energy is developing new and creative ways to improve their operations and protect our environment,” said Director Chester. “We are pleased to have this facility join the ranks of Michigan’s top environmental performers.”

The Campbell Facility has demonstrated its environmental ethic and stewardship by developing and implementing an environmental management system, practicing of pollution prevention, and maintaining a strong environmental compliance record.

“Strong environmental stewardship programs and excellent regulatory compliance work really are a reflection of employee dedication to the highest standards,” said Consumers Energy Senior Vice President, Bob Fenech. “Our goal is to continue improving our operations for the benefit of our customers, communities, and the environment.”

The company has recently implemented a comprehensive site-wide recycling program for universal waste, used oil, scrap metal, aerosol cans, and solid waste. They have also developed a beneficial reuse of fly ash in concrete manufacturing, and created a Waste Minimization Team for the site. In addition, the site manages a 750 acre Biological Field Station, certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council’s “Corporate Lands for Learning” program, which has provided wildlife and conservation education on site to over 1200 area school children.

The Clean Corporate Citizen program is open to establishments regulated under any of Michigan’s environmental statutes. Designations are valid for one year and must be renewed annually. For more information on Clean Corporate Citizen designation please visit our Web page at www.michigan.gov/deqc3.
