Department of Environmental Quality Director Steven E. Chester today congratulated officials at the General Motors Flint Metal Center on achieving the designation as a Clean Corporate Citizen (C3), becoming the 122nd facility in Michigan to join the program that recognizes the state’s top environmental performers.
The Flint Metal Center site comprises 85 acres of a 300 acre complex shared with the Flint Engine South Plant and the Flint Truck Assembly Center. The facility currently recycles about 97 percent of all its waste, and pollution prevention goals for 2006 include a 7.5 percent reduction in energy usage throughout the plant, and a 3 percent reduction in non-recycled waste.
“I would like to congratulate the General Motors Flint Metal Center team for their commitment to the Flint community, and to protecting Michigan’s environment,” said Director Chester. “I am proud to have them partner with us in demonstrating that Michigan can, and should, have both a healthy environment and a healthy economy.”
Other General Motors facilities that have received the Clean Corporate Citizen designation include powertrain plants located in Livonia, Romulus, and Warren; a metal center in Lansing; an assembly plant in Orion Township; and an engineering and office campus in Pontiac.
“Flint Metal Center is a great example of how the people of General Motors are constantly taking actions to reduce the impact of GM facilities and processes on the environment,” said Elizabeth A. Lowery, GM vice president, Environment and Energy. “The innovations that are in place at the Flint Metal Center will reduce energy use and waste generated, and those represent decisions that are good for the environment and for our business. We are very proud to have this achievement recognized by the state of Michigan.”
Flint Metal Center Plant Manager Max Miller added, “General Motors has a strong history of being a good corporate citizen in the communities in which we operate. Our environmental outreach with the Flint area schools and Project Green is part of that effort. We have also hosted a Hazardous Household Waste Collection Day for Genesee County, and hope to do so again.“
The Clean Corporate Citizen program is open to establishments regulated under any of Michigan’s environmental statutes. Designations are valid for one year and must be renewed annually. For more information on Clean Corporate Citizen designation please visit our Web page at www.michigan.gov/deqc3.
