The Department of Environmental Quality reported today that United States Steel Great Lakes Works has completed their air quality compliance programs on schedule as required in a 2005 Consent Order, and recent tests have shown marked improvements in air quality.
As part of the Consent Order, the company agreed to install a new Baghouse to control air pollution emissions from operations at the Zug Island River Rouge facility, and make a number of upgrades to existing equipment in order to improve the effectiveness in controlling air pollution emissions at the Main Plant location in Ecorse.
The final milestone date of May 22, 2006, was met with the visible emissions readings conducted at the roof monitor and stack showing compliance with the 20 percent opacity limit.
“U.S. Steel has taken a great step forward in keeping our air clean,” said DEQ Director Steven E. Chester. “The company's actions demonstrate the importance of maintaining a healthy environment while pursuing economic development and growth."
US Steel recently indicated their intention to fully implement operation and maintenance programs to identify further improvements throughout their operations.
