Department of Environmental Quality Director Steven E. Chester announced that the DEQ entered into an Administrative Consent Order with the Clawson Concrete Company in Macomb County to resolve violations resulting from the unauthorized discharge of process water and sediment-laden storm water into the city of Sterling Height's storm sewer and the Burr Relief Drain.
The Consent Order resolves violations at Clawson Concrete's Plant No. 16 and will require the company to pay a civil fine in the amount of $27,500 and to reimburse the DEQ for enforcement costs of the investigation surrounding the violations. Clawson Concrete has removed the deposited sediments from the storm sewers and the Burr Relief Drain, as well as implemented controls to prevent further discharge of contaminated storm water from the facility.
As part of the compliance program contained in the Consent Order, Clawson Concrete has also agreed to conduct employee training at least once a year to prevent the unauthorized discharge of truck wash water to the storm sewer system.
