The Department of Environmental Quality's Laboratory Services Section has been recognized with a Laboratory of Excellence Award as part of the latest National Environmental Water Pollution Proficiency Test. The award, given for achieving a 100% acceptable data rate in a study of 280 labs across the nation, recognizes the lab's high standards and level of service for responding to potential environmental concerns.

The DEQ Laboratory Services Section operates a number of programs for the state that include an Environmental Laboratory, a Drinking Water Laboratory, and a Drinking Water Laboratory Certification Program.

The proficiency tests evaluate the laboratory's performance in testing prepared samples secured from an independent accredited source. The lab also scored 99.5% on the Solids/Soils Hazardous Waste Proficiency Test.

"This is a testament to the exceptional work that the DEQ laboratory staff does on a daily basis," said DEQ Deputy Director Jim Sygo. "Our laboratory, along with the rest of our department, has extraordinary scientists who have dedicated themselves to serving the public and protecting Michigan's environment."

The DEQ's drinking water lab was similarly recognized in January, 2006 for achieving a 100% score.
