DEQ Moves Forward with Revocation of Operating License for Romulus Injection Well Site

Contact:  Robert McCann (517) 373-7917
Agency: Environmental Quality

July 20, 2009

The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is announcing that it is proceeding with the revocation process of the Hazardous Waste Management Facility Operating License issued to Environmental Disposal Systems, Inc. (EDS) for the aboveground hazardous waste storage and treatment operations at its deep well injection facility located at 28470 Citrin Drive in Romulus, Michigan.

The facility's operating license was issued on December 27, 2005, pursuant to requirements of Michigan's Hazardous Waste law, and was suspended on November 2, 2006, due to a series of violations.  No waste has been disposed of at the site since that time.

The DEQ moved to formally revoke the operating license on August 27, 2008, and began a public participation process to solicit comments and input from the public.  The DEQ has since reviewed all of the comments submitted in conjunction with the public participation process and is now proceeding with the operating license revocation.  Pursuant to the Administrative Procedures Act, the department will file a petition for a contested case hearing with the State Office of Administrative Hearings and Rules where an administrative law judge will take testimony from both sides and make a recommendation as to whether the license revocation can be finalized.

The response to public comment summary and additional information is available on the Internet via the DEQ's Web page at http://www.michigan.gov/deq/0,1607,7-135-3304-19137--,00.html.

Editor's note:  DEQ news releases are available on the department's Internet home page at www.michigan.gov/deq.
