The Department of Natural Resources and Environment announced today that over 73,000 scrap tires have been removed from two illegal disposal sites in southwest Michigan.
L.H. Automotive Recycling in Niles received a Scrap Tire Cleanup Grant from the DNRE for the removal of 42,000 scrap tires from its site, while over 31,000 scrap tires were removed from Joe's Auto Salvage in Three Rivers with a similar grant. Entech, Inc., a scrap tire processor located in White Pigeon, was hired by both of these grantees for the removal of their scrap tires.
The DNRE's Scrap Tire Program is charged with the responsibility of ensuring the proper disposal of all scrap tires generated in the state and the cleanup of existing scrap tire piles in amounts of 500 or more. Over the last 20 years, more than 30 million scrap tires have been cleaned up from sites throughout the state. The DNRE's Scrap Tire Program, including the Scrap Tire Cleanup Grants, is funded by a $1.50 vehicle title certificate fee collected by the Secretary of State.
